The North Carolina Museum of Art has a unique and inspiring history. In 1956, North Carolina became the first state to use public funds to buy art, showing a real commitment to creativity and culture. The museum’s collection soon expanded from European and American pieces to art from many different parts of the world. In 1983, it moved into its current home on Blue Ridge Road, and later added the bright and modern West Building in 2010. The Museum Park also offers trails and outdoor sculptures, giving visitors a fun way to explore art and nature together. Today, the museum continues to grow and welcome people of all ages, staying true to its mission to inspire and connect the community through art.

Ways to Help Us Grow

Donations make a real difference at the North Carolina Museum of Art. They help the museum bring in new and inspiring artworks, take good care of the pieces already on display, and create exhibitions that people love to visit. Donations also support hands-on programs, classes, and events that help families, students, and the community connect with art in meaningful ways. Every gift, big or small, helps the NCMA stay creative, welcoming, and full of life.
